Prepare for your trip to Morocco
Morocco brings together imperial cities, mountains, the Atlantic coast and the Sahara. This guide will help you choose the right season, understand local customs and prepare for a comfortable journey.
Weather and the best time to visit
The climate varies greatly by region. Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are generally pleasant for touring. Coastal cities have milder weather. Summer can be very hot in Marrakech, southern Morocco and the desert, while nights may be cool in the mountains and Sahara. In winter, bring warm clothing for the Atlas and the evenings.
Culture and customs
- Mint tea is a traditional symbol of hospitality.
- In religious places and rural areas, wear respectful clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
- Ask permission before photographing people.
- During Ramadan, be discreet when eating or drinking in public during the day.
- A polite greeting and a few words in Arabic or Amazigh are always appreciated.
Languages and currency
Arabic and Amazigh are the official languages. French is widely used in tourism, and English is increasingly common. The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). Cards are accepted in many hotels and restaurants, but cash is useful in souks, small shops and rural areas.
Moroccan flavours to discover
Try tagine, couscous, pastilla, harira and Moroccan pastries. Each region has its own specialities. Always tell your guide or restaurant about any allergies or dietary requirements.
Transport and getting around
Trains connect several major cities in northern and western Morocco. For mountains, desert areas and multi-stop tours, a private vehicle with a driver offers more comfort and flexibility. In cities, use official taxis and agree on the fare when the meter is not used.
What to pack
- Comfortable shoes and lightweight clothing
- A jacket for cool evenings
- Sun protection, sunglasses and a hat
- A modest outfit for certain sites
